MANOR ROAD, DEAL

THE BRIEF:

Pre-application advice for the change of use of this Grade II listed building in Deal from a workshop to a 2 bedroom home.
Proposed Change of Use
Manor Road
Our client was faced with the choice to buy this property from the current owner provided that the council could accept that the property could be changed from its current use of workshop to residential use. Therefore, we produced drawings that included a heritage statement to investigate the viability for the building to become a home.
The Conservation Area of Upper Deal’s significance is its views which were used for directing boats out at sea. The building is within a conservation area and is Grade II listed. We therefore looked at a light touch approach by repairing the lime render, removing the tin roof and reinstating the thatch. We considered industrial joinery to the windows with diamond mullions while contrastingly using a more domesticated dormer window. This contrast gives reference to the evolution of the buildings use.

The planners were accepting of the approach conditioned to ensure the accommodation could work within the roof space.
