TINY KIWI MEDITATION CABIN, NEW ZEALAND

THE BRIEF:
The Tiny Kiwi Meditation Cabin competition called for submissions for a small, dedicated meditation space to be built on the Earth Energies Sanctuary property. Set within a clearing of local New Zealand bush, the owners are looking to make the most of the natural beauty and tranquility to allow small groups of guests to follow guided meditations and relax while reconnecting with nature.
Proposed Meditation Cabin
New Zealand
Our designs for this conceptual building were based upon the Maori legend of 'How the Kiwi lost its wings'. The building is designed in sections for the individual to experience the story by first entering the building and looking up to the birds flying above the tree tops.

The copper clad roof is a locally sourced material. As the building ages, the copper cladding will go green and the building will naturally mould into the dense forrest.

There are three interventions leading up to the building;

The first intervention is two white blade walls representing the two white feathers given to TUI for not coming down from the tree.

The second is massage chairs. These chairs are inspired by PiPiWHARAUROA as they are not meant for sitting on for too long but they represent not being able to make a nest.

Finally, the third intervention was a class bridge. This represents PuKEKO where the bird does not want to get its feet wet.

The three interventions and the meditation cabin combine to give a cultural, sustainable and tranquil space for practicing yoga.
